As Christians in this present generation, we tend to question God why He allows evil in someone else situation and good in another, especially someone we might consider 'underserved'. Such judgement is not sentimental, I will say, rather a result of our inability to understand the indepth of God's sovereignty and His declared words.
What kind of things that happens in today society to the good 'ones'; 'why him or her?' And 'why not him or her?' We could argue the issue passionately and with good different points of view that could cast down any other plausible argument concerning the situation. And as such, some people's minds, and ultimately their faith could shrink back from their sincere service and worship to God and to Christ Jesus, our saviour, because of the things that happen to the good Samaritan, who deserves care and love and, even to some extents to be worshipped.
But the truth of the two kinds of situation - good and bad - that man encounters in life lies in man's actions as they affect him and the two opposing external forces. Our concern here is on the 'bad' things that the good Samaritan encounters.
EXPLANATION OF THE POINT
- A man before now: Every one of us is somebody before now of which we now stand its victims. Is God not merciful and sin-forgiving? Yes, indeed, He is. And as a matter of truth and sincerity He is a sin and past 'forgetter'. But the fact is, it is God that forgets and forgives us our sins, which is most necessary, but some of our sins never do. The point that proves right the word of God that says, "no sinner will go unpunished." Remember how apostle Paul's past resonant in all his epistles and sermons, even though he had been forgiven, the experience never left him. How is it that the two most recognised religions - Christianity and Islam - who have their source in Abraham are always in disagreement. One was as a result of an action of Abraham's past. So to the good Samaritan, past has always been one of the major threats on their nows.
- The cause of one of the external forces - The warlord of the Persian, Devil himself: We need to understand the fact that no good Samaritan in their actions and other benefitting activities fights ordinary man, no, - they are fighting the devil himself whose wills evil human beings carry out. Therefore, never for once will he, the devil, desires good to come the good Samaritan's ways. Just as the righteous fasts and prays for the destruction of anything that stands their ways of progress, so the wicked does, Acts 23:12. Jesus Christ confirms this fact when said, "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul..." So devil can cause bad things for the good Samaritan and even kill them. That's never a big deal - we will all bodily die.
- The cause of God: God is all sovereign. He chooses to do as He wills. He gives and takes. He makes alive and kills. But in all His actions, God is justified. This is not because I want to give Him such recognition for who He is, but because that is the truth of His actions in all ramifications. Our actions justify God's actions. God may cause a good Samaritan great pains to prevent and intercept greater pains not necessarily for the Samaritan but for other people. The kind of things that happened to queen Vashti who was a good Samaritan to the womenfolk of the land to some extent, Esther 1:9. And the kind that happened to Uzzah who probably desired that the glory of God should fall, 1 Chronicles 13:9-10.
Therefore, there is a foundational truth to all things and all outcomes. Job's life is a perfect example to the three point raised above, for we can argue that Job's action-thought in the past eventually manifested in the present, while devil tried all he could to essure that Job didn't put him to shame, God was there allowing the devil to carry out Job's thought - all to teach us not to be pessimistic about future.
So if you are the kind of a Christian who having seen a good number of good Samaritans suffering pain and eventually died then decides to take your faith lightly, and silently asking yourself, 'What does it benefit one to faithfully and passionately serve God, if He will protect against evil?' Beware, your salvation is at stake.
Now I realise that it is for this very purpose God denounces whoever makes a man their standard, and through the apostles offers us the better option when He says, "Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith...," Hebrews 12:2, and also confirms it for us in assurance of standing tall above all situations when He say, "...for if you do these things, you will never fall." 2 Peter 1:10.
Always remember, good Samaritans are just as you are.
